Invisible Disability Uncovered

For this project, I focused on uncovering and understanding the stigma and misunderstandings surrounding hidden disabilities and, in particular, my own mixture of hidden disabilities (ADHD, Dyspraxia and Acquired Brain Injury)

The project began as a response to the Taylor-Wessing Portrait Prize after I saw many of the images displayed that related to disability. However, I wanted to expand my practice by drawing upon and further developing the understanding of my own disabilities through the medium of photography, and using it to draw attention to the less seen & understood side of disability.

In order to create these images, I chose to work in the studio, using my own body in a form of performance art in front of the lens. Using a long shutter speed, I was able to capture visualisations of both the rapid actions and impulsivity of my ADHD and the confusion and lack of understanding that comes as a result of my Acquired Brain Injury.
