Invisible Disability Uncovered
For this project, Joe focused on uncovering and understanding the stigma and misunderstandings surrounding hidden disabilities and, in particular, his own mixture of hidden disabilities (ADHD, Dyspraxia and Acquired Brain Injury)
The project began as a response to the Taylor-Wessing Portrait Prize after he saw many of the images displayed that related to disability. However, he wanted to expand his practice by drawing upon and further developing the understanding of his my own disabilities through the medium of photography, and using it to draw attention to the less seen & understood side of disability.
In order to create these images, he chose to work in the studio, using his own body in a form of performance art in front of the lens. Using a long shutter speed, he was able to capture visualisations of both the rapid actions and impulsivity of his ADHD and the confusion and lack of understanding that comes as a result of his Acquired Brain Injury.
